Revised Carbonate - Water Isotopic Temperature Scale
نویسنده
چکیده
The relationship between temperature and O content relative to that for a Cretaceous belemnite of the Pee Dee formation previously reported (Epstein, Buchsbaum, Lowenstam, and Urey, 1951) has been redetermined using modified procedures for removing organic matter from shells, and is found to be t (°O = 16.5 4.38 + 0.145*, where 8 is the difference in per mil of the O to O ratio between the sample and reference gas. The new relationship agrees with that determined by McCrea (1950) for inorganically precipitated calcium carbonate. Carbonate-carbon dioxide exchange experiments were done to determine the direct and indirect effects of organic matter in the shell on the mass spectrometer analyses.

Defining an absolute reference frame for ‘clumped’ isotope studies of CO2
We present a revised approach for standardizing and reporting analyses of multiply substituted isotopologues of CO2 (i.e., ‘clumped’ isotopic species, especially the mass-47 isotopologues). Our approach standardizes such data to an absolute reference frame based on theoretical predictions of the abundances of multiply-substituted isotopologues in gaseous CO2 at thermodynamic equilibrium. This r...
متن کاملClumped Isotopic Equilibrium and the Rate of Isotope Exchange between Co2 and Water
The reaction of CO2 hydration/dehydration controls the oxygen isotopic composition in both carbonate minerals and atmospheric CO2 through the exchange of oxygen isotopes with water. The use of O as an environmental indicator typically assumes isotopic equilibrium, namely full oxygen isotope exchange between CO2 and water. Clumped isotopes is a new isotopic tracer that is used in both CaCO3 and ...
متن کاملWARM TO COLD WATER CARBONATE FORMATION DURING THE ORDOVICIAN AND THE JURASSIC: EXAMPLES FROM IRAN, AUSTRALIA, AND ENGLAND
Isotope data from bulk carbonates, micrite, marine calcite cements, non-skeletal grains and brachiopods indicate deposition of a wide spectrum of warm to cold water carbonates during the Ordovician and the Jurassic. This isotopic interpretation is supported by warm to cold climatic models proposed for the Ordovician and the Jurassic. These carbonates formed during the Greenhouse mode (condition...
متن کاملPaleoelevation Reconstruction using Pedogenic Carbonates
Paleoelevation reconstruction using stable isotopes, although a relatively new science, is making a signifi cant contribution to our understanding of the recent growth of the world’s major orogens. In this review we examine the use of both light stable isotopes of oxygen and the new “clumped-isotope” (Δ47) carbonate thermometer in carbonates from soils. Globally, the oxygen isotopic composition...
متن کاملOn the molecular diffusion coefficients of dissolved CO 2 ; HCO 3 , and CO 2 3 and their dependence on isotopic mass
The molecular diffusion coefficients of dissolved carbon dioxide ðCO2Þ, bicarbonate ion ðHCO 3 Þ, and carbonate ion ðCO 3 Þ are fundamental physico-chemical constants and are of practical significance in various disciplines including geochemistry, biology, and medicine. Yet, very little experimental data is available, for instance, on the bicarbonate and carbonate ion diffusion coefficient. Fur...
